We had a patient who was brought to the ED around the holidays. He was autistic and non-verbal, so it was difficult to determine what his needs were. Bailey had him a few days in a row and was able to establish a good rapport. She also advocated for him far beyond what we typically do in these circumstances. The first day she had him, Bailey realized that he was food-motivated and would complete tasks if offered food as an incentive. She got him dressed and took him outside to eat his lunch and have a cupcake. The next day, he was not her patient, but she advocated for leadership to get paints, crayons, and other activities he could do. She took him outside for a walk and again let him have a snack in the courtyard. After their walk, she put out a roll of paper and let him finger-paint. While painting with him, she drew an “E” on the paper. At this point, the patient began signing the letter “E” and pointing to himself. E is the first letter of his name. She then signed a few other simple words like “please,” “thank you,” and “more.” The patient was then able to communicate with her that he wanted “more drink.” It was a huge breakthrough in this patient’s care, and through Bailey taking the time to build a rapport and respond to the patient’s specific needs/wants, we were able to provide a better experience for him.
