...Barb had a patient that had a very serious respiratory problem, this patient was very anxious. Barb made sure the patient was repositioned and reassured frequently, always with a kind and compassionate manner. Many nurses would have become frustrated or overwhelmed at how much care this patient required. Barb never let it show that she was busy, she kept a smile on her face and continued to care for the patient like she was her only responsibility.
Late in the shift, the patient's condition deteriorated and a COT was called. The patient was transferred to CCU. The patient requested Barb not leave her and Barb stayed by her side until the patient's daughter arrived, always giving a calm reassurance.
I know that Barb's extra time with her patient required her to stay late that evening. Barb gave all of this exemplary care without realizing that anyone was paying attention.
