All through her career at the Da-Yuan Long Term Center, Nurse Bi-Lang, Wu has devoted herself to performing her nursing duties in a highly professional and caring way. Thanks to her honest effort and excellent rapport with the residents’ families, she has established with them a high level of trust. She took the initiative to keep the residence’s families informed of the health status of the residents. She has provided teaching and training to the families on using touch as a means to communicate, and show caring to those residents who are bed ridden or unconscious. By so doing, one would promote warmth and love between the residents and their families. She showed genuine interest in knowing each resident’s preferences, and demonstrated the skill to motivate and use some humors in handling residents so that the atmosphere at the long term care center is more relaxed and happy. She has become best friends with many of the residents. She shows compassion and personal interest to them, and the residents feel loved. She has received numerous appreciation and commendations from the families and residents for her outstanding work. One of her job responsibilities is to pay special attention to nutritional quality indicator for the residents. She took the initiative to identify different factors that may contribute to a nutritional risk, and she used progressive ways to solve their nutritional problem.
Specific noteworthy work of Nurse Wu, Bi-Lang: “A very young female child resident with congenital swallowing difficulties”
Ever since she was admitted to the Long Term Care Center, the resident was unable to eat. The family had shown great concern about her inability to eat and Nurse Bi-Lang shared their worries. She also felt that continuous NG feeding was not a solution for the quality of life of this young resident. Furthermore, the child was rather under weight and nutritional deficiency was one of the main nursing concerns. Nurse Bi-Lang took the initiative to research swallowing related nursing care materials.
After a joint consultation with the dietician and a discussion with the family, the team was able to develop a special menu for the young girl. At the same time, through her research she found special feeding techniques and provided training to the nursing assistants. She demonstrated originality in her effort to care for this patient. Through continuous efforts and persistence by the team, the NG tube has been removed for almost a year and there has no incidence of weight lost or aspiration. Nurse Bi-Lang takes personal interest in her residents and thanks to her effort and persistence she successfully achieved this miracle. We are very proud of her achievement and believe she should be recognized for her great work, and that her professional dedication should be shared with others. We have also encouraged her to publish her nursing plans of care via the local nursing journals in order to share her knowledge with others.
