I was recently a patient on the 9th floor as part of the Regional Health Specialty Hospital. Billie Jo was my night nurse for the majority of my stay. During my care, Billie Jo seemed to truly understand my treatment plan including ambulation, bending, and weight restrictions, along with pain control and communication. My daughter is a "worrier" and I know that she called multiple times throughout the nights to check on how I was doing. Billie Jo never made her feel as though this was an inconvenience. She always provided up to date, calming, but accurate information.
Also, although, it seems to be a part of her job, she ensured that I understood my post-operative instructions and provided me with tips for recovery to continue at home starting post-op day one. She exemplifies the true meaning of a compassionate caregiver. I believe she kept my family and me in the center of my care. Her bedside manner was outstanding- sweet, outgoing, friendly, and personable. When reading that the "DAISY Award was for Extraordinary Nurses - to honor the super-human work nurses do every day at the bedside", I instantly thought of Billie Jo; she is a stellar example of how nurses should strive to be.

There's a lot that I can say about Billie Jo. She helped me a lot. She went out of her way to help me get and feel better. She's like the grandma you go to when you need to talk or need a pick me up. I knew that when she was taking care of me, I could trust her that it would be OK. I nicknamed her "Drill Sergeant" because she used to be in the service. I would like to take her home with me to pick me up when I need it.
