Our mother had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and wasn't supposed to end up at the hospital on a ventilator in an ICU or even over here in Med/Onc. She was supposed to have made some decisions, but we put off those difficult talks, so here we are. She should have passed away at home that day, but we panicked. Although, since we have been here, the care has been great. There is one nurse who stands out. Dad was sitting in the chair the first night and the rest of us kids were all over the rest of the room. This nurse came in and she didn't just care for Mom, she cared about Dad too. She left and returned with a bed and said to my dad, "now climb up there and lay next to your sweetie!" My Dad and Mom have always had the type of marriage that people dream of, a true love. What she did for him by making it easier for him to get closer to the love of his life during what turned out to be one of their last days together will forever be in our hearts. My Dad rested better next to her and we know it gave Mom peace too. Brenda Wood is a DAISY Nurse for treating not only my Mom but my Dad as she would her own family. There is no dollar amount that can be put on the compassionate act she shared with us, but it was a true blessing.
