SSgt Dutler’s actions were essential in preventing any further deterioration
SSgt Dutler was dispatched for a 6mo F pt who was actively seizing. Dispatch info revealed that the pt was still actively seizing and had been seizing for approx. 20min. Upon arrival, pt was found laying on the ground in a bedroom, still having an active tonic-clonic seizure. SSgt Dutler immediately took control of the scene and directed the Engine crew to maintain and protect the pt’s airway. After ensuring adequate oxygenation and ventilation, he quickly identified that this pt was in status epilepticus due to recent fevers. SSgt Dutler was able to accurately and efficiently calculate a weight based Versed dosage for the pt. SSgt Dutler then administered IM Versed to the pt’s thigh. Approx. 1min after medication administration, the seizure stopped. Pt was then taken to the ambulance and transported to JBER Hospital. Pt remained stable during transport with no breakthrough seizures. SSgt Dutler was able to act quickly in the middle of the night and in a high-stress situation to provide a high level of care. SSgt Dutler’s actions were essential in preventing any further deterioration of the pt and stopped a life-threatening emergency.
