On our second night, my wife and I had been awake for nearly 36 devastating hours, shaken from the traumatic experience we had endured. When Brie Chute RN, came on shift Friday night, we were worn out and utterly exhausted. A nurse is intended to be an advocate for the patient, and Brie accomplished that task and then some. She was able to coordinate with the rest of our care team and provide us with stretches of quiet and peace.
While my wife and I finally took some time to rest, Brie worked with her colleagues and continued where Lindsey left off in preserving our memories of our daughter with keepsakes. Brie provided us with the perfect balance of direct care and being able to provide us a safe space to recuperate and grieve. The next day was the day that we went home, and the day we said our final goodbye to our daughter. Being relatively rested and having a clear mind to think with, was critical in our transition to home and dealing with saying our goodbyes.
Brie was able to come into work, recognize and react to our specific and tragic situation, and provide the exact personalized care for my wife and me. Nurses are a special group of people, but great nurses, like Brie, need to be recognized.
