My wife was admitted to the Labor and Delivery unit for an induction. While very excited for the birth of our son, I also had a lot of anxiety and worry surrounding the hospital stay. Past healthcare experiences at other hospitals had left me feeling unheard, not advocated for, and discriminated against due to the color of my skin. Given my wife and I are a mixed-race couple, I had a lot of concerns regarding the care she and my son would receive. Brittany was our nurse the day my son was born, and her whole demeanor melted my fears away. I watched as Brittany and her student nurse physically and emotionally supported my wife through her labor as if she was a close friend or family member. They motivated and cheered her on through each contraction which allowed me to support her without crippling fear. Because of her care and compassion, I have a new respect and faith in the healthcare system. Thank you, Brittany.
