I would like to recognize Calli for her amazing care over the weekend. Calli was working with a young girl who was newly diagnosed with Diabetes. She lives with her father and older brothers. Her mother is deceased. Along with her diabetes, she was also diagnosed with a UTI. A lot of dedicated time was spent providing diabetes education in both English and Spanish. When I met this young girl and her father, they both referred to the tools that Calli had created for them over the weekend to make the calculations possible. Although they needed some more practice, both had a good grasp of the concepts and were a supportive team to each other. The patient proudly let her team of male doctors know that she was ready and excited to go back to school.
While all of this was awesome to see, what was most meaningful to me about Calli's care was this: In just one weekend, Calli played a significant female role for this young girl. Calli not only taught her about Diabetes, but she also helped her learn more about her feminine health and hygiene. She washed and braided her hair every day, and made sure she took care of her body in full. Although her family is a wonderful support to her, the patient's father expressed deep gratitude to me in regards to this extra feminine care that Calli provided.
I was so touched to be able to hear this story. Calli is an amazing nurse. I feel so fortunate to work alongside her and see her provide such a personal touch to her patients and families. I hope she can be recognized for the incredible extra steps she took to empower this family.
