Carmela is a coworker who time and time again goes above and beyond for her patients. She constantly goes above and beyond and yesterday was no exception. Carmela was taking care of a patient who not only was suffering with dementia but has cancer as well. She noticed the patient becoming increasingly restless and frequently calling out for her daughter. Noting her distress, Carmela tried several different distractions for the patient… finding a TV show she might like, turning her bed towards the window to look outside at the trees. Nothing seemed to be helping. Carmela then came up with a brilliant idea to make the patient a baby doll out of towels, swaddling it with a small chuck pad and taping an adorable baby’s face to it. She gave it to the patient not knowing how she might receive it but figured it wouldn’t hurt. The patient’s room was near the nurse’s station and several nurses stood up to find the source of what seemed to be singing. A group of us peered in on Carmela’s patient and found her not only singing to her baby but feeding it with juice and burping it after. Carmela’s patient fell asleep holding the baby doll in her arms. It was not only comforting for the patient, but heartwarming for all of her coworkers to see. We are all so grateful for Carmela and truly believe her kindness should be noticed.
