Carolyn was my nurse in the observation unit on the same day as my birthday. She entered my room to check on me and found me in full meltdown mode. I was having a lot of pain and discomfort and was very upset to be spending my birthday under these conditions. She immediately comforted me and listened to my concerns and went above and beyond to satisfy my physical needs.
Then, unbeknownst to me, she arranged for a piece of cake and ice cream to be delivered to the nurse's station. She took the time to make me a card and gather all the nurses on the floor to present me with the gifts while singing Happy Birthday to me.
Patient care isn't just about satisfying physical needs, but emotional needs as well. I immediately felt better. Carolyn made me feel special and it did wonders for my recovery that day.
I will never forget this birthday and how special she made me feel. I cannot stress enough how important mental well-being is to a successful recovery and Carolyn recognized that right away. We need more nurses like Carolyn. She is an amazing asset to this hospital.
