Lori went beyond the basics of reviewing the diagnosis, meds, and plan of care, but made sure he knew where to go for her follow-up appointments, and even woke him down to the department/area (in-house) where they would need to go for her outpatient testing.
While in my office today, I was approached by a family member who wanted to speak with the “Boss”. Of course, I was ready to grab my ‘Grievances’ notepad and sit down to talk. I explained to him I was the ED manager and asked if there was something I could help him with. The family member went on to tell me what a great nurse they had in CDU today.

He states that he has been to “many facilities”, and this, “by far”, was the best care he and his wife have ever received. He explained that he has been taking care of his wife for over 20 years; she has dementia. He said that Lori, the nurse, went beyond the basics of reviewing the diagnosis, meds, and plan of care, but made sure he knew where to go for her follow-up appointments, and even woke him down to the department/area (in-house) where they would need to go for her outpatient testing. The family member states Lori was extremely knowledgeable and “charismatic” in her care, reviewing the whole person, not just a simple diagnosis while making sure that he, the caregiver, knew exactly what to do upon discharge. This was a compliment well deserved as we know Lori Masters RN, looks out for all!

There are so many examples on a day-to-day basis. I have known her to buy clothes for an elderly man who lives alone, whose clothes were dirty and torn, she did not want to discharge him home in dirty clothes. She buys birthday cards for her patients who are here on their birthdays. Providing word games, coloring books, and puzzles so the patient would not get bored. Making sure a patient from out of town had a gas card, that she purchased, as he was running low on gas when he came to the ED. These are only a few examples of how she cares for others. Not to mention the bowls of candy, replenished every time she is here, even making sure she sends a baggie of candy to the nurse receiving her patients upstairs.
