She wasn't just doing her job. I am so thankful to have had Cayla during this birth because I can't imagine trying to get through it with someone else.
Cayla Walker was a phenomenal nurse and went above and beyond what we ever expected in our birth experience. We arrived and things were progressing very well. I had a rapid COVID test that morning since my PCR test from the previous day had not come back yet. The rapid test came back negative. When the doctor came in to break my water, a nurse came rushing in to say my PCR test came back positive. We were very alarmed, had to get a new nurse since the current one was pregnant, and we had to be moved to a new room. This is when we met Cayla. Cayla was our nurse for the remainder of our time in the birthing center that day. I had a difficult labor. Once we started Pitocin after my water was broken, we ran into issues with my daughter's heart rate. I had to be moved into a new position every few minutes to keep her heart rate up. Cayla coached me through all the moves I would have to make and helped me to move my legs because I had an epidural. She was constantly watching the monitor to watch my daughter's heart rate and talking me through what was going on. In the meantime, we had another COVID PCR test done and that came back negative. Despite two negative tests, we still had to follow all COVID protocols. Cayla was in all of her PPE gear for hours, yet she never left my side until she was essentially forced to take a break. I knew I was in good hands the entire time because she was so diligent in talking through what was going on with both myself and my daughter. She helped direct my husband on what to do and got me whatever I needed to be comfortable. As I progressed more and more, it became clear that my daughter was in distress at times. She kept the doctor up to date on everything that was going on. When she went on a short break, I had gotten to 10 cm dilated and she returned to my side within minutes. When it came time to push, she coached me on how to do it properly, encouraged me to keep going, and ensured that I had oxygen when I needed it. Besides my husband, she was my biggest support person, and I couldn't have done it without her. After a hard time pushing, the vacuum on my daughter, and many position changes, it became clear that I was not going to be able to deliver my daughter in the time we needed to, so we went to Emergency C-section. It took a great deal of time to get my daughter out and I had a T incision, and my daughter ended up in the NICU. Cayla came to our room the following night just to check on us. She was nearly in tears because she felt so bad that our birth experience wasn't what we wanted it to be. However, I knew that it was more than fine because we got our daughter out of it. Cayla made us feel heard. She made us feel supported and I knew I was in the best hands I could have been in the entire time. She stayed on top of the monitors, worked so hard to try to keep my daughter's heart rate stabilized and you could tell that she truly cared about the outcome. She wasn't just doing her job. I am so thankful to have had Cayla during this birth because I can't imagine trying to get through it with someone else. Her communication with us made us feel comfortable the entire time, even when the emergency c-section occurred, and I would be more than honored to have her as my labor and delivery nurse again in the future. In fact, if it were possible, I would absolutely request her!
