The care, passion, and empathy that Charlie showed reflected his true character and went above and beyond the Core Values of Ascension St Vincent.
Recently, Charlie went above and beyond his normal duties for the safety and welfare of two infants, and their parents. Charlie had just gone over on a transport from door 5 to Women's. On the way back, Charlie found himself right in the middle of Ascension police officers dealing with a mental/emotional young woman at the end of the ER drive. I remember seeing Charlie get out of the vehicle to come assist and thinking to myself, "There couldn't have been a better person to be in that car right now."

Charlie immediately jumped in and wanted to help. The woman had climbed through the sunroof of her vehicle and was sobbing on the roof of the SUV. This young woman, only 20 years old, was one week postpartum and also had a set of 9-month-old twins in the car. The man driving and the young woman were arguing loudly with each other. The woman then wedged herself between the twins in the back seat. To complicate the situation, none of the doors on the vehicle had a handle and could not be opened from the outside. Charlie went to the window of the vehicle and started talking with the young woman, trying to de-escalate her and get her out of the vehicle safely. Charlie was able to effectively calm the woman down as medics arrived. Medics were able to assist in getting her out of the vehicle without incident. The woman was placed on an EDO. The two babies were taken into our care so they could be checked in the Peds ER. Charlie and I carried the babies from Katie Knox up to the ER, where a welfare check was completed. Charlie continued to check on the babies throughout the next few hours.

The care, passion, and empathy that Charlie showed reflected his true character and went above and beyond the Core Values of Ascension St Vincent. I was grateful and thankful that he was there at that time. Charlie never hesitated to assist.
