I was at BSWH MF Radiology Dept. for a diagnostic mammogram and sonogram. Needless to say, I was filled with concern for what these tests would reveal. Cheryl Kafel, Nurse Navigator, was immediately at my side. She softly explained to me and my husband why I needed further tests and how they would be done.
I was then taken to the dressing room. Cheryl didn't leave me alone to wait and wonder. She patiently sat and visited with me until I was taken in for the mammogram and sonogram. After the results were known, Dr. C and Cheryl appeared to discuss my further need for an ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Cheryl's presence was very comforting to me. It was agreed that this biopsy could be done at 2 pm.
After dressing to go home and return later, Cheryl offered and did walk with me to tell my husband, who was volunteering in the ED that morning. She explained the situation to him as I was a bit emotional. Cheryl then, hand in hand, took me to the valet parking station and asked that my car be brought to me.
When we returned for the biopsy at 2, Cheryl took us to a private room and explained "what I should expect during the biopsy" and "what I should expect after the biopsy". Back to the dressing room and a delay in putting me in the procedure room, Cheryl patiently stayed with me and visited. Once in the procedure room, another delay due to an emergency elsewhere, Cheryl kindly kept my husband in the waiting room informed of the delay.
When Dr. C appeared, much caution was taken as to my identity, my list of meds, and my allergy list. Cheryl asked if she could hold my hand as the biopsy procedure began. This again was very comforting to me. As each step of the biopsy was being done, I was told what to expect by Dr. C. This took some of my fear away. My experience this day was much more pleasant and less painful than I anticipated.
First, I praise God for His comfort and assigning an angel, Cheryl Kafel, to be with me. Cheryl gave me her contact information to use if I had questions while we wait to get the biopsy results. I understand BSWH MF has implemented Nurse Navigator as a new service to us patients. I so appreciate your care and concern for our comfort.
On a scale of 1-10, I would give Cheryl a definite 10!
