As a fellow ED staff nurse, Cheryl Martin is a nurse that I look up to. She not only exhibits compassion and caring with patients and families, but also the entire ED team. She is always upbeat, positive, considerate, and enthusiastic. Cheryl is really great with families. She is able to make even the most critical patients and families feel comfortable. I have observed her comforting the family of a patient involved in a serious Level 1 Trauma, while being able to control the patient's stress and pain. When I work at the RNA desk, a family will ask if Cheryl is working and if she can be their nurse because her attitude leaves a lasting impression on many families here in the ED.
Cheryl actively participates in the preceptor program for new nurse hires and always makes sure to introduce and go out of her way to praise and help the new hires to feel comfortable. When I mentioned I was going to nominate her for this award, I had an overwhelming amount of coworkers, physicians, and PCT state how she deserves it! Cheryl has been dedicated to the ED and the entire hospital. She has participated in the trauma fellowship, the ICARE transplant fellowship, and is active on several ED committees.
***
Ihave never worked with a more caring, compassionate, and experienced nurse than Cheryl. Day in and day out, she is beyond welcoming to every person that enters the emergency department, co-worker or patient. Cheryl is one of our number 1 preceptors, teaching so many of our new hires that join our team. In addition to being an active preceptor, Cheryl is also involved with many committees and has completed many different nursing fellowships within the hospital, such as the trauma fellowship and transplant fellowship. She is viewed as a go-to resource in the unit and is always approachable and accepting of the ongoing changes within the department.
Recently, Cheryl's compassion was evident during a recent intubation in the ED. The parents were distraught in the corner of the room and once Cheryl walked into the room, the family recognized her from a previous visit. The family's anxiety level immediately deescalated because of Cheryl simply explaining the intubation process and reassuring them. She is such an asset to our team and completely worthy of a DAISY Award. She truly is a role model to so many of us nurses in the department. I can't say enough positive things about her passion and love for nursing!
