When Challenges are at their highest is when the nurse is tested the most. This was evident in Claudia's shift on September 29th when she took all the noises and concerns of the packed ED and focused on one thing. A patient arrived via ambulance in cardiac arrest and Claudia stepped up and led the code team. This was when the most extraordinary thing occurred. The wife of the man who passed away was devastated as was the large extended family. The wife was Spanish speaking as is our very special Relief Charge Nurse Claudia. She translated for the physician and consoled the wife and family. It was reported later by the family that this small, Hispanic nurse with a bun in her hair shared tears with the wife in her greatest moment of loss. The family felt the generous and sincere compassion this nurse gave; it was clear it came from her heart.
"It was an honor for me to support the nomination of Claudia Lozano RN for Chino Valley Medical Center's first Daisy Award Honoree," says Cheryl Gilliatt, Director of Critical Care Services. "She is what nursing stands for. She worked 14 hours that day, the last two being the most important. There is no greater testimony than that of the grieving family."
Nursing is a blend of art and science. Without one the other lacks wholeness. Chino Valley Medical Center wants to say a big thank you to Claudia for her quiet strength and contribution to the great care given in the Emergency Services Department.
