... I come to the NICU from the downtown resource NICU pool for the night shift. The last shift I worked, our unit was extremely hectic at shift change with a code cord being pulled requiring a NICU team and another C/S simultaneously also needing a NICU team. Both of those patients ended up on our unit in the 1900 hour requiring admission with access, assessments, labs and dex instability. Our night shift charge RN/Neo/RT had to attend another delivery. Other night shift nurses were busy caring for their own heavy assignments and I needed to obtain a blood culture, PIV and give bolus/IVF. I was walking up the hall and peering into rooms looking for another person to help hold the patient. Courtney was trying to chart and catch up from her own day but noticed what I was doing and offered her assistance happily. Courtney ended up having to assist with this patient who needed immediate intervention for over one hour and then she finished her own charting from the day. Courtney continued to help until she knew I was caught up. Courtney didn't leave the unit until after 2100, and she had to return to work the next morning. Courtney never complained, and always kept the patients' needs first. I cannot imagine how the night shift crew would have ever cared for all of our patients needs without the day shift help! North NICU definitely knows how to work as a team!
