Cuong Phan, BSN, RN, CSMRN
Cuong is a strong leader on our unit. He makes sound clinical decisions, advocates for safe patient care, and exhibits teamwork on a consistent basis. Cuong is also a strong supporter of unit leadership by supporting all unit initiatives.
Recently, Cuong was the Resource RN and was responsible for coordinating with multiple teams in order to safely manage an extremely challenging behavioral patient. A patient was exhibiting erratic and paranoid behavior and both psychiatric units were full. The patient was placed on a 5150 hold. Cuong assisted the Primary RN (a New Nurse Resident) to review the patient’s chart and review PRN medications during an emergent situation. He advocated for staff safety by reviewing the importance of maintaining a safe pathway out of the room and how to activate DART. A short time later, the patient became violent and was placed in restraints along with medication. The patient then exhibited super strength and broke out of the restraints, ran out of room, down the hall, and out of the emergency fire exit. With assistance from Security Services and other interdisciplinary team members, the patient was escorted back to the room and a new plan of care for safety was implemented.
