Cynthia’s actions of recognizing her patient's decline and her persistence with the primary nurse to properly intervene gave her patient a fighting chance to live.
Cynthia was providing care for a patient who had been admitted to the acute care facility. Before lunchtime, she had noticed the patient's work of breathing and behavior was starting to change from her morning assessment. She had made the primary nurse aware of the situation so he could come and assess the patient. On arrival, the primary nurse agreed with Cynthia’s assessment and called respiratory therapy for a breathing treatment to assist the patient. After the initial intervention, Cynthia went back into the room to check on the patient, and she recognized that her condition was declining quickly despite receiving the breathing treatment. She immediately got the primary nurse and strongly suggested that this patient needed to have a rapid response called on her for life-saving interventions. Again, the primary nurse agreed and he called a rapid response. Cynthia stayed in the room to assist with the rapid response care and was able to help transfer the patient to a higher level of care. Cynthia’s actions of recognizing her patient's decline and her persistence with the primary nurse to properly intervene gave her patient a fighting chance to live. Her courage to stand up and speak out shows her dedication to her patients in the delivery of quality, safe care. Great job, Cynthia!
