When no one would come to our unit to round on patients due to isolation precautions, Dan would go into the rooms, do safety checks, and talk to patients.
8D has been a COVID unit the whole pandemic. We frequently have patients who are critical and are trained on the spot on how to care for them. During peaks, it’s a unit that had multiple codes and intubations in a shift. Needless to say, it is not what many of us expected when we entered nursing.

Dan, one of the day shift ANMs on our unit, made “nursing in unprecedented times” doable. Dan is always a present and active leader during emergent situations. Dan makes sure the patient is safe and nurses feel comfortable with their assignments and tasks. Dan always goes above and beyond to advocate for patients AND nurses. When no one would come to our unit to round on patients due to isolation precautions, Dan would go into the rooms, do safety checks, and talk to patients. Even if Dan never was primary nurse for the patient, they still knew him and would say how much they love him! We even had a patient calling him their “adopted grandson”. When none of our patients were allowed to have visitors, Dan would be on the phone calming down and explaining what was going on to upset family members in between all his other insane tasks.

When we were floated to the COVID field hospital, Dan (who was charge for the whole 8D unit and also often had his own patients) would call us to check and make sure we were ok and help if we needed it. He helped to instill a culture of teamwork and collaboration among nurses on our unit that kept us on board when we were all emotionally exhausted and physically drained. On days when we are super understaffed and busy, Dan will often buy everyone takeout and make sure we are able to eat.

In addition, Dan also knows how to do almost EVERYTHING because he has worked so many different roles at the Hospital. Dan has worked as a HUC and a tech prior to becoming a nurse and ANM. For almost all of the random questions, Dan knows the answer or knows how to find someone who does. Even though he has been in the Baptist system for so long, he’s also open and active in making evidence-based improvements in patient care. If you have an idea about a change, Dan will logically talk it through with you. Dan is a leader who understands the importance of work/life balance for Nurse sanity and retention. He works to make scheduling as conducive to our needs as possible, and if an emergency comes up, will do whatever he can to work it out with you and other staff members.

Daniel is one of the ANM on the COVID Unit. He is an asset to his Collogues. It has been so busy and frustrating at times however he is always calm and cooperative. I always call him the real man of the nursing team.
