Daniella is kind, compassionate, caring, and a valued member of the Perioperative Services team. Daniella is one who values the spirituality and beliefs of those she serves as well as her own. She treats patients and team members with respect and dignity without passing judgment or criticism, treating them the same no matter where they stand in their walk of life. She cares for a varied population of patients with many different health-related issues and backgrounds on a daily basis.
In one such instance, Daniella was assigned to care for a fellow St. Elizabeth family member. The patient was taken by surprise with unexpected news that could have life or death implications. However, a definitive diagnosis could not be made without undergoing a surgical procedure. The patient was informed by her surgeon that the procedure should take no more than 2 hours if there are no abnormal findings; yet, it could take 4 hours or longer if there are untoward findings. The patient was focused on the timetable given and went into surgery with this in the back of her mind. When she returned to PACU from surgery, Daniella was at her bedside. Upon awakening, the first thing she asked is what time is it? Daniella informed her that is was just after 11 am. This meant that the procedure had lasted over 3 hours. This made the patient very emotional because she knew that she would most likely receive bad news concerning her condition. Seeing how upset the patient was, Daniella instinctively held the patient's hand and asked if she could pray with her, even though there were a million and one things to do. Daniella was able to determine exactly what her patient needed right at that time. This simple act of kindness and compassion helped the patient to feel as though she was the only one who mattered at that moment in time. Daniella gave the patient her undivided attention to meet her needs both emotionally and spiritually. This helped the patient to find peace and comfort in the most trying of times. It truly is the little things that mean the most.
This encounter is only one example of the caring nature and emotional support that Daniella provides our patients at St. Elizabeth Healthcare on a daily basis. Daniella is a true DAISY Nurse.
