The sight of the nurse who saved her life now singing “Imagine” at her bedside will always be unforgettable to me.
My developmentally disabled sister came up to the 7th floor MICU from another floor in septic shock. It was in the very early hours when I came into the room, there was a busy nurse named Dax, who was taking care of my sister. Septic shock is not something unfamiliar to me. I watched my father go through two episodes of it and ended up dying from the third. My mom also spent over a month recovering from sepsis too. Altogether, I have literally spent hundreds of hours watching nurses work in the ICU. That said, I have NEVER seen anyone work so hard on behalf of a patient as Dax did for my sister. He barely left her side, and when he did, it was to only bring in medications and other supplies. Without any visible fatigue, he tirelessly titrated blood pressure medications, updated doctors, and checked her ventilator lines- all while checking in on us from time to time. Dax wasn’t there the day she came off the ventilator, but a few days later he checked in on her while she was recovering in step-down. She has a very social personality and she absolutely LOVED Dax. During the visit, she had one last request before Dax had to leave: “Sing me a Beatles song”. Dax complied. The sight of the nurse who saved her life now singing “Imagine” at her bedside will always be unforgettable to me.
