My husband was transferred from Trauma Neuro to the Neurology Unit on the 8th floor after suffering a brain bleed. I remember that night as clear as today, when a very unassuming, yet capable, calming and quiet nurse arrived in our room for the night shift. Deanna and her med cart rarely, if ever, left the area outside my husband's room that night. His blood pressure was uncontrollable in addition to his compromised neuro status. We had many nurses during our stay, however, it was Deanna that was our constant. I dreaded hearing she was off. Because of Deanna, I knew I could go "home and sleep" and my husband was in excellent hands. Deanna's calming and caring presence made all the difference in what was a very difficult time. She never dismissed concerns but would take the time to explain situations and address the slightest change in my husband's status taking swift measures to ensure the issue was addressed.
Deanna will forever hold a very special place in my heart, as I feel she was our extra special Angel that was sent to care for us.
I recall the day we were being transferred to rehab and the anxiety that I was feeling. Deanna very gently said that "He needs to get to rehab and get moving, that is what is going to get him better". I didn't understand it at the time, however within the first few days I comprehended what she meant. Unfortunately, my husband does not remember anything from his stay at UPMC Hamot, but has heard many times the praise and admiration I have for Deanna.
I am pleased to share that he is referred to as the Christmas Miracle. He came out of his coma state on December 22nd. Returned home January 4th and is back to working full time. Deanna, you were a major part of his recovery and I will never forget your caring and kindness.
In my opinion Deanna exemplifies the true essence of the DAISY Award through the extraordinary Compassion she showed us, the Courage to ensure all of our needs were being met, and her unwavering Integrity in every situation throughout our stay.
