The Pediatrics Unit recently had an 18-year-old developmentally delayed patient admitted to the unit for diabetes. Unfortunately, due to social issues, this girl ended up staying as an inpatient for approximately 3 months. Although the entire staff embraced her, one nurse, Debbie Kelleher, really took a special interest in this patient. Debbie helped her stay on a special diet often working with dietary to select her meals for several days in advance. She spent a lot of time with the patient, forming a special bond. Debbie not only bought her clothes so she did not have to wear a hospital gown, she also frequently laundered the clothes.
Debbie demonstrated extraordinary compassionate care during this patient's stay. Her kindness helped this patient, making a difficult time a little bit easier. The patient has since been transferred to a group home. Debbie has made special visits to see her on her days off at the home and this has greatly improved her spirits.
