Because of Delaney's fast actions, we were able to get the patient back!
I would like to thank my nurse and share my story on why this nurse is so special. I would like to nominate this nurse for a DAISY Award because, for being a brand new nurse for just under a year, Delaney has shown she has got what it takes to be exceptional.
The few weeks during the cyber-attack have not been easy for anyone; we are all doing what we can to get through this hard time. Being part of the 5 North cardiovascular team, we need someone during this time to be out of staff to watch the telemetry monitors to make sure all patients' rhythms are being seen and any abnormal findings are reported to the providing nurse. Most of the time, this out-of-staffing nurse has been the charge nurse. The night of Saturday, 5 North was busy.
We had five nurses to 25 patients. From the hours of 8 pm to midnight, we had one fall, one code, four rapid responses, and two security events. We were all running. Delaney, being the charge nurse and only having five nurses, had patients of her own on this day. While having a team of her own, Delaney still ensured she was still there to watch the monitors. She noticed that a patient was in a sustained V-Tach when she took off toward the room to help the nurse who was caring for the patient. When the two of them noticed that the patient had no pulse, they pulled the code blue lever and began CPR.
Upon my arrival to the room, I took over compressions while Delaney made sure someone was recording and that we were all doing what needed to be done. For being a nurse for under a year, she ran this code like she had been doing it for years! Because of Delaney's fast actions, we were able to get the patient back! It was a domino effect tonight. When one thing happened, another thing happened twice as hard. Delaney was there for everyone. She was in every room for each rapid, the code, each security event, and the fall, and she still showed excellent care to her patients and finished all charge duties. Delaney's hard work and dedication all while keeping a smile on her face kept the unit floating this night, she never missed a beat.
From all of us on 5 North, Delaney, Thank you for all that you do!
