What I am most proud of is the way we support and lifted each other up during this very dark time.
With 2020 being an unprecedented year, I feel this year warrants an unprecedented DAISY Award. The teamwork exhibited by the unit this past year has been nothing short of exceptional all while doing what none of us ever imagined to be possible!
Our little ICU team rallied, supported each other, and managed the ICU in a way that was nothing short of miraculous. We handled the unimaginable with minimal staff and resources. We picked up numerous amounts of extra shifts to make sure our patients and coworkers were supported. We responded to every Code Blue and Rapid Response call. We cleaned windows for patient family members to view their loved ones. We held phones while loved ones said their final goodbyes. We hugged, held hands, and prayed with the family of these patients who were denied because of COVID.
In addition to the tremendous amount of care we gave, we cleaned rooms, drew labs, emptied trash and soiled linens. We had days where we tripled up on vents with patients flowing over to ER and continued to give compassionate care. Thanks to the teamwork of the unit, in fact, we continue to receive phone calls from some families to give us updates on their loved ones as we became just as close with the families as we did our patients.
What I am most proud of is the way we support and lifted each other up during this very dark time. We relied on each other to talk and debrief. There was always one of our team willing to take a minute to listen and be the "rock" for the time being. We cried and laughed, and some days sure took their toll, but thanks to our strong teamwork and love for each other, we made it through, and we will share this crazy COVID bond forever.
While in the midst of COVID, we also helped develop and implement our prone positioning which was completely new to Doctors Hospital of Manteca. We began proning our ventilated patients, which is no easy task. We are also very close to going live with our new DKA Protocol. We all continue to seek education and resources to grow our ICU and for that, I am extremely proud and honored to work alongside my fellow ICU Teammates.
