My husband was admitted to this hospital with a diagnosis of Atrial Fibrillation, congestive heart failure and urinary tract infection. I have been staying with my husband around the clock. While I was walking in the hall to stretch my legs, I happened to notice this article about the DAISY Award. After reading it, I knew the very nurse that fit the description of an extra-ordinary nurse. Being a graduate nurse of Kentucky Baptist Hospital, class of 1955, the first and most important thing that we were taught was compassion and TLC. This was the thing that impressed us so much about Dorothy, plus the fact that she was so knowledgeable of my husband's condition. She was very willing to take the extra time to answer any questions about his treatment and medication.
Dorothy was the admitting R.N. We were immediately impressed by her beauty, her professionalism, and she was so compassionate and informative and had a special way of making us feel like my husband was her only patient. They bonded instantly and when she was off on Friday, we requested her on Saturday. Just observing her interaction with my husband and others was impressive. I was in the hall one day and noticed a lady standing by the door of the room two doors down. She was crying and upset, so I approached her and put my arms around her and asked if I could do anything or pray for her or with her. She hugged me and we exchanged names. She shared with me that her husband has cancer and just found out that he is terminal.
Later in the day, the lady came to me and wanted to tell me that Hospice would be called. She said that my husband's nurse, Dorothy was the person that sat with them and explained everything in such a way that they family just knew that they were making the right decision. The next day, the lady came to me to say thanks and also to tell me how much Dorothy had made the whole experience easier. She was their guardian angel. She shared that her husband had just died.
Dorothy has meant so much to us that we have decided to maintain our friendship and stay in touch after we leave the hospital.
