Ebony consistently exhibits respect, compassion, trust, and integrity not only for the staff she manages but to all her colleagues, physicians, parents, and children. I share an office with her and see her exhibit these behaviors consistency with everyone she encounters.
Special Connection: I have seen countless number of her staff plus many other staff/providers-physicians/APPs from other departments come into our office to share concerns or issues with Ebony. They value her knowledge, experience, and sympathetic ear to help them resolve any issues that come their way. She enthusiastically guides them or sometimes resolves these issues on her own. She turns no one away. She will often stop what she is doing to attend to a person’s needs. Staff consistently come to her when exploring professional growth opportunities.
We have several ACA’s who are continuing or pursing their professional growth. They ask for guidance, they ask her to review their applications, provide recommendations, review essays or other work. One of the most impactful moments for me to witness was Ebony’s persistence in helping an employee who has a significant hearing loss who floated into our unit for a few months. This hearing loss was really affecting this employee’s communication with staff and parents. She explored a way for this employee to be evaluated on her hearing loss. She was able to have this employee get properly evaluated and it was determined that the hearing aids she had were ineffective and not allowing her to hear. With the added use of masks for all staff and visitors she was unable to read lips to aid her in her communication.
With Ebony’s help, she was able to get this staff member a well fitted and appropriate hearing aid. This genuine concern for this employee brought her to tears! She said no one has ever gone out of their way to help her like she has and she has changed this staff member’s life forever. This employee can now better communicate with staff. This is something she had never experienced. This kind gesture from Ebony brought me to tears! WOW! So much love and compassion for someone she just met. I will always remember the moment this staff member walked in our office and expressed her gratitude!
Significant Difference: Ebony encourages all staff to learn from their mistakes with empathy. She encourages staff to learn and grow in their role by granting them opportunities they seek or that she feels will be an opportunity that they would do well in. She is currently allowing staff to learn the EKG tech role since we will have a short term need for coverage. She has also recently had an ACA learn the phlebotomy role based on an ask from this employee. She has allowed her to learn different skills.
