I would like to recognize a great nurse who always has a beautiful smile on her face, Elaine. I'm so impressed by her professional bedside manner every day. Calming down agitated patients and coaching them to be compliant to treatment are Elaine's talents. This morning Elaine started her shifts with two difficult patients. the first patient has been refusing care all night, including blood transfusion, lab, medication, almost got into a fight with night shift in the room, security had to get involved. Elaine walked into his room, talking to the patient in a soothing voice, explained care, again and again, finally the patient agreed to receive treatment and care he needed.
Another female patient had been calling frequently for every single small thing. She got really upset and yelled and cursed at the nurse if the nurse didn't show up immediately. Then she would apologize for her behavior. Elaine was able to group the care together and set expectations. Instead of putting a sitter in the room, we were able to use our PCT on the floor to ensure this patient's special needs were being met.
We had a patient whose two daughters are critical care doctors from another hospital. Once they came in they would follow the nurse around and request report, demanding to speak to the patient's attending physicians right away. Most nurses requested not to have this patient again, which I totally understand, but Elaine was able to manage the situation, updating everyone in a timely manner. One of the daughters even bought food for the staff members and showed great appreciation to the care we provided. A few days later when Elaine came back she did not have this patient, but she still went into the room, gave the patient a big warm hug and asked how she was doing, the lady was so happy to see Elaine and started chatting with her. Elaine is such a great role model of a caring, loving nurse, she is a great asset for our organization!
