His calming presence and inspiring attitude put patients at ease during the most difficult stays, and he remembers that patients are also human.
I have been meaning to write this for a while, but I am a chronic pain and chronic illness person with not very many good days.

Recently, I was in the ER and ran into Elgene again for the THIRD time. This person’s dedication to patients is unmatched by any provider I have ever had at Kaiser.

As I waited in the triage space last month, Elgene came in for a “difficult stick” which I can be. I was put at ease by Elgene’s easy personality, and he made me feel comfortable with my needle phobia, despite my prior traumas. He then appeared many times during this visit and brought up that he had remembered me from when I came in twice in one week.

I was like, "Oh my god, are you the person who gave me the sleep mask!" I told Elgene, and it's true that since that day I had sepsis, I take that mask in my bag with me everywhere in case I must go to the ER and possibly the hospital. It’s one of my security blankets because I can put it on for my migraines, no matter the lighting.

He was a friendly and kind face that helped ease my anxiety, as this time I was more coherent but just as distressed. He also assisted the paramedic transport when they came, as they were two small women and needed a third person to assist in the transfer from the bed to the gurney.

The times I have been treated humanely and warmly were few and far between, but ALWAYS by your nursing staff and techs. Elgene is a rare individual working in the healthcare system who hasn’t forgotten why he is there and why he wanted to work in the healthcare field, to begin with—to help people.

This person deserves to manage others as he leads by example. His calming presence and inspiring attitude put patients at ease during the most difficult stays, and he remembers that patients are also human.

I thank Elgene for his continued dedication to the healthcare field and to people. I hope he gets the recognition that he deserves. A lot of people at Kaiser could benefit from his example, and I, for one, am forever grateful for my repeated encounters with him.

Please tell him thank you for me. An amazing individual. I can’t say enough good things about him.
