Beth had a patient (Mr. H) who was admitted to the hospital with cellulitis to the right lower limb.The patient ended up having a trans-metatarsal amputation of the right foot. Mr. H has been a patient of the outpatient wound care center for some time. His significant other suffers from dementia and does not drive and has no other family involvement. During his admission to the hospital, Beth came to learn that she only lived a few miles away from the patient. During this time, she found out that he wouldn't be able to drive when discharged and that the significant other can't drive.
When the patient was discharged, there were a lot of follow up appointments to make, a greenhouse to tend to, grass to mow, and grocery shopping that needed to be done. Beth, her husband, and her son came together as a family to assist this patient and his significant other. Beth's husband drove this patient to and from appointments, including to the wound care center. Her son mowed their grass and tended to the greenhouse. Beth took the significant other to the grocery store and helped shop for groceries. Beth certainly has shown compassion for this patient and his family, was active in ensuring that his quality of care was top notch pre and post-discharge, she was innovative in meeting his needs, and was extremely respectful in advocating for the patient.
I have known Beth for a very long time and I know her work ethic. This case is just one example of her compassion for her patients. She also took care of a family member of mine, who was dying a few years ago. My in-laws were so happy with the care she gave to this family member. She communicated the plan of care with them in a way for them to easily understand. Beth is an outstanding nurse and deserves to be recognized.
