Our unit was named a COVID unit about a month and a half ago now, and it's been very tough on everyone. But Emily has been so supportive every shift I work with her and goes above and beyond to make sure her patients (and mine when I need a hand) get the best care possible.
This past week, we had a husband and wife come onto our unit who both tested positive for COVID. They were put into separate rooms, but this past weekend, Emily would set aside time so she could wheel the husband over and sit with the wife for a while. The improvement in both of their moods was incredible.
I discharged my patient who was in a semiprivate room, and Emily had the idea to put the husband and wife in this room together. Both were going on comfort care and we didn't know how much longer they had. Emily was an excellent patient advocate and worked with the team to make this happen.
The family was contacted, and they were so comforted by this idea. Ultimately the action was able to be carried out, and Emily persisted and trusted her gut to do what was right despite the obstacles she faced to get there. Tears were in her eyes leaving the floor that night. I'm very lucky to work with such a compassionate nurse.
