“They have gone above and beyond to take care of me”. My father’s exact words. This nurse has taken the time to educate my father (who is non-medical and frankly scared to be in the hospital “because people go to the hospital to die.” It has been great to have this nurse taking care of my father because they check on him, gives him a chance to respond to the questions and tried to make light of a very dark time in my father’s life having a colostomy placed. He has really been struggling but this nurse has helped him to feel more confident while in the hospital. He was feeling very overwhelmed with trying to learn about his “new” ostomy and to empty it and even looking at it was overwhelming him. He is participating in the care a little bit more each day and he said this nurse had been “showing him the ropes.” Yesterday afternoon this nurse updated me on his medications and how things had unfolded that night and after they left the room I asked my dad if he wanted to nominate this nurse and he said, “Definitely they have really helped me.”
