Emily helped to simplify the medications for the family. After we had identified parents' inability to read and write, this nurse created a visual binder with pictures of the urine dipsticks (color-coded with different ranges) as a creative method to document urine logs on a daily basis. In this binder, all this mother had to do was to circle the image, which would have been far easier as she was not able to read or write the usual document log that we handed out to patients with this condition.
I want to recognize a nurse for consistently exhibiting children's values by going over and beyond to ensure our patients' needs are met. She is a true example of what Children's represents: dedication, caring, and passion. She consistently demonstrates these behaviors and supports the Children's mission wholeheartedly. As a colleague, I appreciate her for always being available to assist both her fellow teammates as well as doing whatever it takes to provide the highest quality of care for our patients. She does this with a smile and always with a cheerful outlook. The following comments from our providers best support her nomination and explain why she is a DAISY Nurse.
Comments from a few of our Providers:
"This nurse’s dedication to patient care is inspiring. She is not only responds promptly to all requests regarding patient care but also takes proactive steps to make workflow smoother. Her approachability and collaborative spirit make every interaction with her a delight." Example: For instance, she took the initiative to help me set up accounts with Quest and Lab Corp, which has made a world of difference in how efficiently I can now access and monitor patient labs (a few labs sometimes take longer to cross over to Epic).
"I reach out to her for my complex patients."
"This nurse has been a tremendous resource for us juggling our complex patients' needs. I have countless examples of how she goes above and beyond for patient care. There are many more examples to share about the diligence and dedication shown by this nurse. I consider myself truly lucky to work alongside her. She truly deserves the recognition of the DAISY Award". Example: My first important recognition was for the extent of patience and dedication that she has for our nephrology patients. I have a patient who is a Rohingya refugee who recently relocated to the US from Malaysia. She had a relatively common condition, however parents had limited understanding of this condition and struggled to comprehend instructions on checking urine protein and medications. There were a lot of struggles identified from a family/social perspective as her parents are illiterate and only spoke Rohingya language which is very challenging in terms of getting an available interpreter. This nurse took the responsibility to patiently await an interpreter on the phone, which occasionally can take up to an hour to call and check in with the family at least twice a week when this patient was in relapse. Parents struggled with compliance of this medication as they were confused with the meds due to inability to read the name of the medications. This nurse helped to simplify the medications for the family. In this binder, all this mother had to do was to circle the image, which would have been far easier as she was not able to read or write the usual document log that we handed out to patients with this condition. Father reported that it is definitely an easier method. This nurse took it upon herself to closely follow this patient and I am so proud to say that this patient has been in remission and parents were able to complete medication dose and duration as instructed with close additional care given by her. Secondly, I also would like to share about an incident when I was tied up with a very busy inpatient service. I received a frantic phone message from a parent who was unclear about how to administer kayexalate medication to an infant. This nurse went out of her way to call our pharmacist and also after that provided very clear instructions to the mother after our verbal discussion. While this may sound like a simple example, to me she saved me a ton that day by taking care of this important outpatient issue which sometimes we struggle to be on top when the inpatient service is busy. I felt very relieved when this nurse took care of this matter on my behalf. I have many similar examples for other patients. I also had a patient whose mother is Spanish speaking and lived about 3-4 hours away from Atlanta. This nurse went out of her way to ensure the child's pediatrician was able to administer the medication and also ensured that she was taught how to administer this medication. The Mother was initially very hesitant due her fear of needles, and later became proficient with subcutaneous injection. This nurse continued to check in and provided confidence to ensure she was able to administer the medication.
"This nurse is always thorough, diligent, knowledgeable, and a joy to work with. She anticipates the needs of the patients and goes above and beyond to help everyone around her. She is reliable and adapts her work to make sure the task is complete. One of our young patients who was having difficulty getting a certain medication formulary was helped immensely by this nurse finding out which pharmacy carried the right formulation and getting everything set up speedily so that the physician covering a hectic inpatient service could promptly provide the needed care for the child. She also helps patients navigate obtaining lab work, follow up on critical questions, and does background work that makes care delivery prompt and efficient. She helps the providers maintain a positive rapport with patient families. Our trainees and other staff have also benefitted greatly from her work ethic and team spirit. We strongly and unanimously believe that this nurse is very well deserving of this award."
"She is a bright and motivated nurse who always goes the extra mile without ever being asked. She is able to anticipate what is needed and always makes sure things are streamlined as much as possible for patients and providers. I can always trust that whatever task this nurse takes on will be completed conscientiously and efficiently. She is one of the best nurses in our office, and she consistently sets an example for high quality nursing."
"Here is a very recent example of the wonderful work this nurse has done. She recently got a call on one of my patients regarding a medication. She called CVS to see if they could fill the medication and learned that CVS was filling the prescriptions under a different patient. She not only contacted risk, but all the other specialties that were affected with this CVS prescription error so that every specialty could re-prescribe her medications under a new (correct) CVS account. The patient got the medications they needed and remained out of the hospital. I was amazed how she went above and beyond to help this patient and her family."
