Emily was very compassionate, which was important to Mom seeing as how the pain she was experiencing was extreme and more importantly, she was scared.
Our mother was admitted to the oncology unit for treatment of metastatic bone cancer. During her stay, the entire Oncology Department staff demonstrated a high level of professionalism and support. There was, however, one individual in particular who stood out, Nurse Emily Wescott.
Ms. Wescott demonstrated the utmost dedication to her profession and to her patient. Her compassion for caring was most obvious with the way she spoke to and managed our mother's care, so much so that our mom, who at times could be critical of others, mentioned several times how impressed she was with her young nurse stating explicitly that Emily was very compassionate, which was important to Mom seeing as how the pain she was experiencing was extreme and more importantly, she was scared.
Emily demonstrated that she is a highly skilled and dedicated nurse, explained everything to our mom and to us in a manner that allowed us to make the best decisions for our family and, most importantly she listened to all of us, listened to our concerns, listened to our questions - as an RN myself, my questions were pointed - and she responded appropriately, explaining the impacts of some critical decisions that my brother and I had made for our mother as her condition worsened.
Upon reaching the end of her shift each evening. Emily ensured our mother was cared for, comfortable, had everything that she wanted, and introduced her evening replacement. At the end of her weekly tour, she explained to mom that she has to leave for a few days, again answering any questions, showing great compassion and skill. Before she left, she met with my brother and me, gave me a hug, and wished Mom well. We have since learned that she went so far as to check on our mother by contacting the evening nurse when she was gone.
Emily possesses a clear passion for helping others and for her profession. Her behavior is that of a role model and is greatly appreciated.
Emily is a true DAISY Nurse. I offer her this one piece of advice, from an old nurse to a young nurse, never lose your passion for what you do. Thank you.
