His warmth and compassion made me feel not only welcome but also like a part of his family during this challenging time.
I had a fall at home that required urgent care. Although I usually visit the VA, this time I went to urgent care because its only about 7 miles from my home. While there, they advised me to go to the emergency room, and I was directed to a local hospital. Despite my hesitation, they ran tests and sent me home with pain medication for my injured leg. Unfortunately, within 5 days, the pain became unbearable. I returned to the VA, where the staff provided a 10-day supply of antibiotics, advising me to return if the pain and bruising persisted.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and the pain had been excruciating for the past 3-4 days. My daughters convinced me to go back to the VA, and around 5:30pm, they took me to the ER. Erik, who greeted me, promptly arranged for a doctor to examine my leg. As feared, the antibiotics hadn’t worked, so they ordered blood work and a CT scan. Erik ensured our comfort during the wait. After a few hours, I had the CT scan, and the results confirmed an infection and an abscess. I was admitted, and Erik informed me that there wasn’t an available bed upstairs yet. Finally, around 3:30am, I was moved to my room.
I am submitting this nomination for Erik because, during my recent visit to the ER, Erik delivered exceptional care that exceeded my expectations. His warmth and compassion made me feel not only welcome but also like a part of his family during this challenging time. Erik took the time to ensure that both my daughters and I understood the procedures and treatments, providing much-needed reassurance. His commitment to patient education and effective communication truly stood out. It’s evident that serving our nation’s Veterans is Erik’s passion, and he takes immense pride in it. Furthermore, Erik’s dedication to his work remained unwavering, even during the busy holiday. Despite the festivities, he maintained attentiveness, empathy, and professionalism.
While I’ve consistently received excellent care at the Portland VA Hospital, Erik’s exceptional service truly made this experience memorable. I sincerely recommend Erik McLinn for the DAISY Award. His kindness, expertise, integrity, and unwavering dedication deserve recognition.
