Finding out that a loved one has passed brings an immeasurable amount of grief. In healthcare, staff must deliver this type of news more often than anyone would hope. Esmeralda Rodriguez was able to assist a family during this time with an immense amount of empathy and caring. A young family who had been involved in a traumatic incident was finding out that their 10-year-old son had passed away from a gunshot. Esmeralda heard that the patient's family did not speak English and went in with the physician and language line to help provide comfort to the family in their preferred language. Despite misplaced blame by the sister, Esmeralda remained empathetic and compassionate to help her cope with her grief. She then stayed beyond her shift to remain with the family during this time. In the face of unexpected trauma and loss, Esmeralda was able to find a way to show support and make an impact to this family during their time here.
