During my recent hospital stay, I was admitted to the hospital for a total hip replacement and, to my surprise, tested positive for COVID-19. I didn’t have any symptoms, and we went ahead with the surgery. I was placed in the SICU for isolation. My nurse, Ethel, went above and beyond to provide me with exceptional care and was helpful in my healing process.

Since I was in isolation, she checked on me frequently and responded to my calls quickly. She made sure I felt safe and secure in my environment by making sure I had my call bell and offering items to help me sleep as comfortably as possible in the hospital. She made sure I had everything I needed, even things that I didn't think I would need, like a fresh pitcher of water in reach before leaving the room. She always had a warm smile and took the time to listen. She explained what COVID would mean to me and my family and any procedures and medications I was getting, and she made sure I understood them. Her compassionate and attentive approach made me feel important and supported throughout my recovery.

She prioritized my pain management. She helped keep my pain to a minimum. On nights when I was in intense pain, she offered me a pure wick to help me. Ethel also suggested things such as orange juice when I was having a lot of cramping with my fingers and toes, and it helped. She taught me how to use the breathing machine to prevent pneumonia, the importance of stockings, and getting out of bed to prevent blood clots.

First thing in the morning, she helped me get out of bed, did my AM care, changed my gown and bed, and got my room clean and ready for the day; I felt special. She stayed in contact with my doctors and called them on my behalf as needed, especially when I was having pain and anything else she thought I would need in my recovery from the doctors. Ethel's dedication to me was truly remarkable; you can tell she loves her job as a nurse by the pleasant demeanor she gave me.
