You meet some people in your life that inspire you to be a better person and give 100% of every minute of every day. Geertje is one of those people. I know the DAISY award is dedicated to those nurses that provide an amazing patient experience. I know nominees are recognized for their clinical expertise and compassionate care. However, Geertje is an everyday DAISY hero.
Just to familiarize you with who this terrific person is...she runs the Medical / Surgical unit and the Emergency Care Center in our Critical Access Hospital in Winnsboro Texas. She is definitely a working supervisor. She works nights and days. There is no cushy job for her, No Sir. She is not a sit down kind of nurse; she is "hands-on" all the way. Geertje NEVER misses an opportunity to teach, to provide knowledge, to improve processes or efficiency. She is compassionate and empathetic with patients as well as co-workers.
As most Trinity Mother Frances employees are aware, we had a visit from an external regulatory agency just before Christmas. As much as we think we are always ready for this kind of visit, it was still unexpected. Geertje was so calm and so confident, even the inspectors commended her by name. They actually said that she was extremely professional, intelligent and was such a rare pleasure to have worked with. Now I ask you, how often does that happen?
I guess what I am trying to say, is there is not one thing, but so many things about this nurse that is beyond words. Geertje DeJong is definitely deserving of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. It is a privilege and a pleasure to work with her.
