It takes a special gift to help patients feel like they are still worthwhile people, even when they don't look, sound, or smell their best. You have that gift.
My husband was admitted for three days to recuperate from a spinal fusion. However, we certainly do remember you! All the nurses on 3 East were great, but you stood out, and I will tell you why. First of all, you showed a genuine interest in us as people. I know patients don't always show their best side to nurses. They're in an environment they're not used to, and they are anxious about what will happen to them. They are in pain, and they feel a certain level of helplessness. They feel like they are nothing but complaining bodies, without their normal poise and self-assurance. It takes a special gift to help patients feel like they are still worthwhile people, even when they don't look, sound, or smell their best. You have that gift.

Secondly, you taught us things we needed to know, especially upon my husband's discharge. It was a little scary for me to realize I would need to be his nurse at home when I had no idea what level of care he might need, but you helped me understand what I would need to do. You told us you had thought about being a teacher before you changed your mind and became a nurse. Let me assure you that you are both. You are a nurse who teaches patients and their families what to expect. This makes them feel more at ease as they face an unknown future beyond the hospital doors.

We wish you all the best as you continue on your chosen career path. No matter where your work may take you, please be sure you will always brighten the place where you practice your many skills.
