Hannah Daniel is an extraordinary nurse who goes the extra mile every day for her patients and for our unit. Hannah is a very knowledgeable nurse who is always approachable and willing to help me. I know I can go to her with any question or task and she will know exactly what to do.
An example is when I needed to draw blood on a hard stick patient. Hannah helped prepare me for the patient outside the room by double-checking my supplies, checking the policy, and even helping me by predicting the questions that the family would be asking me. I felt more prepared and confident with Hannah by my side at the patient's bedside. Hannah is always someone I can go to with a problem and she will help me find a solution.
Hannah shows the qualities of compassion, advocacy, and exemplary practice with all of her patients. An example is when a patient required lengthy care. Hannah had to plan his schedule to include breakfast arriving by 8 am so he could receive his medications at 9 am. After that, the patient required 2 hours' worth of skin care (bathing, creams) which was all performed by Hannah. This was followed by physical therapy, wound care, doctor's rounds, child life, etc.
Hannah was able to make a schedule for the patient that provided the best care for the patient while also keeping the patient's best interest in mind. Hannah was able to coordinate all his care to happen in the morning so that in the afternoon he had his own time that he could do whatever he wanted without any disruption from staff members in the afternoon. The patient appreciated his alone time. She was trusted with the information that the patient told her and was caring. She expressed interest in the patient's hobbies and collaborated with child life to help bring entertainment to the patient. She also advocated for the patient to be moved to a bigger room, so the patient could have the space to walk around. The amount of time and thought she put into this one patient was unmeasurable. She made a big difference in the 12-hour shift she had with the patient.
Hannah is also a very knowledgeable nurse and has amazing assessment skills. She can come to a patient's bedside and immediately see the problem and find ways to fix the problem. I have seen her advocate for her patients multiple times. She advocates not only for patients but for her fellow team members. She is our Nursing Practice Council Vice-Chair providing leadership for our unit. She is strong and very determined to make our hospital a better place to work.
