Hazel was able to make a miracle happen – coordinating between units, getting cake and other decorations, and making sure everyone was where they needed.
St. Lucie Medical Center had a patient who was terminally ill with cancer. They had been with us for over a week and had begun to decline. During Nurse Leader Rounds, the patient informed Hazel that she was planning to be married before her health deteriorated. She and Hazel talked and thought that maybe she could be married now in case she got worse. Hazel immediately sprang into action to coordinate a wedding for the patient.
It was late Sunday afternoon, but Hazel contacted a priest who was willing to officiate the service. Hazel talked with the patient’s daughter and found out that she had already purchased a wedding dress. Hazel asked the daughter to bring the dress in. The patient didn’t yet have a veil, so Hazel asked her own niece to go out and purchase one for her. She made arrangements for everyone to be part of the ceremony the next day, but unfortunately during the night, the patient’s condition worsened, and she was transferred to Intensive Care. That did not deter Hazel. She continued with her plans, changing the location of the wedding. She made sure the serenity garden was beautifully decorated to ensure that our patient had a special day. Hazel was able to make a miracle happen – coordinating between units, getting cake and other decorations, and making sure everyone was where they needed.
