Looking at the meaning of the award, you cannot help but think about Heather. She is the most compassionate nurse I have ever met. Heather is not one that likes to draw attention to her actions or herself, but as a friend and co-worker, I have seen first-hand the love and care she provides our patients. A few examples of some of the things she has done over the last few months:
A homeless man had no clothes to wear when he was being discharged. Heather not only went and bought him a change of clothes, she bought several pairs of shorts and shirts for him also. She filled a backpack up with toiletries, snacks, socks, and detergent. Heather went shopping for this after working all night to make sure he was taken care of, then snuck it back in without staff seeing her. From paying for important medications to just buying patients or their family a drink/snack, she always goes above and beyond. Heather has the biggest heart, and only wants the best for her patients.
Heather is also known for bringing her patients special items to make them feel important. A patient was refusing to eat. Heather spoke to the patient and found out they liked a certain kind of fruit. The next night, the patient had this fruit mysteriously appear, and the patient started to eat.
Heather's co-workers are also blessed with her kindness. She never forgets a birthday. She is the first to help a co-worker in need. She would give someone her last dollar if she thought they needed it. She does all of this with a smile and contagious attitude. She never complains.
Our motto is to extend the healing powers of Jesus Christ, and Heather does just that with the love and care she provides her patients and co-workers. She works hard and gives 100% to everyone around her. We, as a ministry, are blessed to have someone like her, and I am blessed even more to call her my friend.
