I have worked with many nurses on different units, and one nurse who I think exhibits extraordinary compassion every day he works is Hector Arias. Sister Simone Roach discussed "5 C's of caring - commitment, conscience, competence, compassion, and confidence". Hector embodies each one of these qualities as he serves his patients and families and the nurses he works with on 6E. As a chemo certified nurse, he has been called upon to come in beyond a normal schedule to manage difficult chemo medications. He is aware of the patients, families, and nurses on his unit and assists in any way possible. He has a heart as big as Texas. He helps, teaches, cares for, and excels at his nursing work.

Hector acts without hesitation to help when asked, whether it be patient, family, coworker, or anyone else. He jumps right on whatever is needed.

I don't know how I would be able to make it through this experience [being a patient] without the wonderful nurses who work here at MC Fort Worth. One in particular who has helped me is Hector. He goes beyond my questions and needs and has helped me to understand what to expect from the medications and my body as it reacts to them. I feel like I ask him the same things over and over, and always with patience, he will explain it to me again and again.

I have been in and out of several hospitals with my mom, and there has not been one nurse who has treated her with as much compassion as Hector. He made her feel at home, loved, and important. You can stand in the hall and see that the whole floor is crazy busy, but when in the room with Hector brings calmness and gives 100% of his attention to make sure she is taken care of. We have been blessed to have him care for us during this difficult time.
Hector is a wonderful example of a compassionate nurse.
