She braided my cousin's hair, read her books, and allowed my family to be included in her care.
Recently my cousin was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia and adrenal problems. Elaine was her nurse for several shifts. Elaine was the epitome of excellence and professionalism when dealing with my two aunts (caregivers of special needs) and took the time to listen, communicate, and convey true caring in all her encounters with each member of my family. She braided my cousin's hair, read her books, and allowed my family to be included in her care. She showered my family in love to the last breath and beyond my cousin's death. She even stayed after my cousin passed away past the end of her shift to ensure my family had everything they needed to deal with the death of my cousin. I am at loss for words on how to adequately convey my feelings on this and how I will be forever indebted to Elaine for what she did for my family during this time. As nurses, we all are charged with the criteria for the DAISY award, which exemplifies excellence, teamwork, compassion, advocacy critical thinking, and patient family focus. This is what we should be doing on a daily basis. Elaine didn't have to sit with my family, braid my cousin's hair, read her books, or care for them after her shift. BUT SHE DID. My family will always hold her in the highest regard. Thank you, Elaine. What you do matters greatly, and my family will always love you for the peace you gave us during this difficult time.
