We had a young patient on the 4th Floor who was admitted with severe abdominal pain requiring her to have surgery the next day. She has her 7-month-old daughter with her and we could tell there were issues with the baby's dad and he made it clear he had no plans to stay and take care of the baby or take her home with him. We could tell the patient was extremely anxious around him and she told us she had moved here from out of state with him and had no family here. We told him he didn't have to stay or take the baby home and we made a plan to take care of the baby rotating staff as needed.
During this time Holly who works on the 3rd Floor was floated to the 4th to help out on the day shift and she was assigned to this patient. Holly was able to pick up quickly that this patient was in an abusive situation. Holly earned her trust and was able to get the patient to share with her that it was truly an abusive situation but she didn't feel there was any way out. Holly convinced her there was a way out and convinced her to take the help being offered. Holly not only helped her make a plan while she was in the hospital but stayed connected with her after discharge and helped her navigate her way free and safely back to her home state with the baby.
