When thanking this exceptional and unassuming nurse his reply was always, "It's just what you do". Well, I am afraid I would have to disagree with him. He is such a caring and conscientious nurse. For Iain, nursing is not just a job for him but it is a vocation.
My son was admitted to the ward, his first time in a hospital. Understandably my son did not know what to expect. In fact, although I am certain he was told, he did not know that he could ask for analgesia between regular drug rounds. I contacted the ward and Iain was the first member of staff I spoke to. I explained to him what was happening and that my son would say if asked he was fine even if he was not, as he did not want to cause any inconvenience. In this regard, Iain took time to assure him that he was not a nuisance. The communication that I had with Iain assured me that I was speaking to a nurse who really understood the meaning of holistic care and did not regard family asking questions as an imposition.
We, as a family, do not live in that area but having met Iain any fears we may have had regarding our son's care and the operation he was to have were alleviated just by Iain talking us through the process. Whilst discussing our son's treatment Iain took the time to actually sit with us. That in itself spoke volumes. He had the time to spend with us rather than standing ready to run as soon as the conversation was over. He was especially supportive when my son's operation was canceled twice. I know he was a very strong advocate for my son and his needs. Whilst visiting my son I also became aware that Iain was equally supportive of all whom he made contact, be they patient, visitor or staff. Our lives have been enriched just by meeting this man and we will remember his kindness and care for a very long time. Iain is a true DAISY Nurse.
