Ingried consistently helps and treats each Veteran with respect and dignity while acknowledging their individual needs.
A Veteran was diagnosed with Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, Narcolepsy, Asthma, and Meniere’s Disease. Recently, this Veteran was also diagnosed with a Pituitary Mass. The Veteran reached out to her mental health team. She was feeling extremely overwhelmed and anxious, in addition to experiencing migraines and blurred vision related to the Pituitary Mass. The Veteran related that her symptoms were making it difficult for her to continue university studies. As an art major, she was unable to complete assignments. Her symptoms also made it difficult to drive and complete the one hour and fifteen minutes one-way commute to school. The Veteran stated that the university would not allow her to withdraw without a letter from a medical provider. The Veteran spoke with Mental Health Nurse, Ingried Aleksic. The Veteran stated, “I’m stressed out and feeling extremely overwhelmed. I don’t know what to do.” She admitted to making several unsuccessful attempts to have her primary care provider assist with a letter to support her withdrawal. She was tearful and confessed to not knowing whether she was reaching out to the right people. Nurse Aleksic could hear the desperation in the Veteran’s voice and volunteered to help. She consistently helps and treats each Veteran with respect and dignity while acknowledging their individual needs. Although the Veteran’s need was not directly related to mental health, Nurse Aleksic recognized and respected the plea of someone desperate for help. She knew the Veteran was reaching out to anyone who was willing to listen, so she allowed the veteran to explain the situation and vent her feelings without judgment. As a true advocate, Nurse Aleksic began by building trust and using her moral compass, intelligence, and competency to assist. The Veteran was concerned that by verbalizing her true feelings about not getting help as quickly as she desired, someone might get in trouble. Nurse Aleksic possesses a high degree of Integrity and reassured the Veteran there would be no such consequences. Her honesty, forthrightness, and trustworthiness are remarkable. The Veteran had no reason to be concerned. Discreetly, Nurse Aleksic reached out to multiple departments and spoke with several providers to advocate on the Veteran’s behalf. As a result of her intervention, the Veteran finally received the letter she needed. Additionally, Neurology and Ophthalmology Consults were requested, and the Veteran received follow-up calls from the psychiatrist and case manager. These positive results embody the concept of nursing excellence and exemplify World Class Service. Nurse Aleksic's actions were swift, well-meaning, and demonstrated her commitment to the provision of optimal patient care. In this instance, the Veteran received the type of high-quality and humane care that she was seeking. A simple statement from the Veteran “Wow! Thank you so much. I wasn’t expecting all of this … and so fast”, maybe just a few words. But the gratitude in our patients remains when we are truly there for them.
