You could see in the patient's eyes the calmness he felt with this nurse by his side.
On Monday evening, there was a Rapid Response. While the nurse was attending to the patient in the B bed, she heard the patient in the A bed moaning (this was not normal for this patient). As she took a peek at the patient and she noticed that there was blood all over the floor and pouring out of patient's right groin (old insertion sight from a month ago for a AAA repair). The nurse immediately took control of the situation and called a Rapid Response while applying pressure to the patient's right groin. During the time of the Rapid Response this nurse encouraged the patient to keep looking and just listen to her voice. While placing pressure on his groin, using her other hand to hold the patient's hand, and speaking softly and calmly to the patient the whole time. You could see in the patient's eyes the calmness he felt with this nurse by his side. During every IV attempted, IOs inserted and medication given to this patient the nurse was explaining everything the entire time. I have worked in many ICUs during my career of over 30 years and the time this nurse spent with this patient and kept everyone calm during a trying situation should be commended. Even after the patient was transferred to the ICU the nurse came back finished her note on the patient and continued her 7P-7A shift without missing a beat. A true professional and an asset to 3 East and the Nursing Staff. This Nurse is Jackie Hill, RN, and I feel she should be recognized for her skills and the care she gives to her patients. She is a definite asset to the Unit and Hospital.
